Our Tech Literacy Initiative continues to make strides in equipping our support staff with essential digital skills. In our second session, we focused on developing typing skills, a fundamental competency for any tech user. This session was all about hands-on practice and building confidence in using word processing software.

Session Highlights

1. Recap and Warm-Up

We began the session with a brief recap of our previous lesson on logging on. Participants shared their experiences and any challenges they faced, which helped us address any lingering issues and reinforce their newly acquired skills.

2. Introduction to Typing Skills

Understanding that typing is a cornerstone of digital literacy, we introduced the basics of touch typing. We explained the importance of typing proficiency and how it can improve productivity and ease of use when interacting with technology.

3. Hands-On Practice: Word Documents

The core activity of this session was hands-on practice with word processing software. Participants were guided through the following steps:

  • Opening Word Documents: We demonstrated how to open Microsoft Word and create a new document, emphasizing different methods of doing so.

  • Typing Practice: Participants practiced typing sentences and paragraphs, focusing on accuracy and speed. We provided tips on proper finger placement and posture to enhance their typing efficiency.

  • Saving Documents: We covered the importance of saving work regularly and demonstrated how to save documents in different locations, such as the desktop and specific folders.

4. Personalized Assistance

Throughout the session, we provided personalized assistance to ensure everyone was comfortable and confident with the tasks. Participants were encouraged to ask questions and seek help whenever needed.

Looking Ahead

Building on the skills acquired in this session, our future workshops will delve into more advanced features of word processing, such as formatting documents, using templates, and incorporating images. We are committed to ensuring that each session builds on the previous one, creating a solid foundation of tech skills for our support staff.

Conclusion

Our second session of the Tech Literacy Initiative was another step forward in our mission to enhance the digital competencies of our support staff. By focusing on typing skills and word processing, we are empowering them with the tools they need to succeed in a tech-driven world.
